I’m Tom Dwyer,
Congress and the President continue to spar over the budget, but they quit negotiating long ago.
Republican Eric Cantor gave a glimpse behind the curtain as to why things aren’t moving forward…
“If the president wants to let our unwillingness to raise taxes get in the way,” he said, “then we’re not going to be able to set differences aside and focus on what we agree on.”
Cantor admits the intransigence of the Cons, but blames the president! For a party based on “personal responsibility”, it seems paying fair taxes is not part of the deal.
Cantor’s words reveal a fundamental refusal to, and lack of understanding of, the purpose of negotiations.
At some point you actually have to meet your opponent on some middle ground, accepting that you may not get everything you want.
Sadly, the ‘selfish gene’ is dominant in conservatives, and compromise over their greed for money is tough ground to hoe.
