Shop Talk- Should you tip your mechanic?

This month we take another dive into the deep waters of Quora.com…

Quora’s question-  Should people tip auto mechanics for their hard work in fixing vehicles, even though they are already paid for their services?

Our answer-  Sure, if you want.  Don’t know many people who would say no to a tip!  But it might matter depending on what kind of shop you’re working with.  In our shop, we’ve had a couple clients offer cash tips over the years and the Service Advisors (who actually took the cash) gave it to the Techs (who actually did the work).  It may not be the same at a tiny shop where the Owner may take it (but maybe that’s who you were trying to thank) or at big Dealership where the money may stop at the front desk.

Tipping isn’t common in the auto industry, so neither Advisors nor Techs depend on tips.  It’s not like food service where employees depend on tips to make their rent.  Whether the staff is paid hourly (like our shop) or on commission (like the vast majority of the industry) they make (or at least can usually make) a good living on the work alone.

However, we’ve had many, many clients who have ‘tipped’ us with cookies, candies, flowers, tickets, or other perks, especially during the holidays.  We love it!  (The staff better be quick on the cookies, though!)  If you want to say thanks then there’s nothing like something personal the whole shop can enjoy.  And in today’s world, if you think you’ve gotten superior service then the absolute best way to thank the entire shop is to take a few minutes to LEAVE A REVIEW on your personal favorite review site.  It thanks the whole staff, shares what you’ve found, and helps keep the shop strong for the long run.

And thanks to you for your consideration about even wondering whether to tip at all!

We have a couple ongoing offers you might find valuable…

Carbon Neutral Program

Our company’s commitment to the environment led us to partner with Bonneville Environmental Foundation to create our Carbon Neutral Program in 2007.  Members offset the carbon production of their vehicles for one year AND save 10% on Labor Charges here at the shop! It’s a win for you AND our environment and it’s been very successful… since we instituted the program our members have prevented over 1.9 MILLION POUNDS of carbon from being dumped into our air!

Referral Reward Program

Year after year, referrals from our existing clients are our greatest source of new clients, so we’ve tried hard to think of some way to appropriately reward people for their referrals.  Our solution is  our Referral Reward Program, where we make donations to the non-profit group of your choice to say ‘thanks’ for your generous referralsHere’s how it works…

And just a couple other things to know…

Your reviews and referrals matter

We’re constantly grateful for the supportive and loyal clients we’ve developed over the years.  Your comments and appreciation keep us on the right road to providing the superior automotive service you deserve.  Your reviews and referrals are not only the highest compliments we can receive, but they’re the lifeblood of our new business.  If you like what you’ve found at Tom Dwyer Automotive Services, please tell a friend or write a review on Yelp, Google, or the review site of your choice. Thank you!

Latest Automotive Recalls

Automobiles are just like any other product; occasional flaws in manufacture or design can cause problems once they leave the factory.  When an issue is identified the manufacturers and government work hard to bring the vehicles back in for refit or repair, but not all recalls make the front pages.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains a constantly updated list of recalls from every manufacturer
