Shop Talk- THIS will protect you when buying a used car

Comment of the Month

This month’s Comment comes from a review posted to SureCritic and Google.  Jorge V. gave us 5-stars and this review…

“Tom Dwyer’s mechanic shop is where I’ll be going as long as I’m in Portland. I recently bought a vehicle from a dealer that supposedly was “ready to be driven”. I got it inspected at Tom Dwyer’s and they discovered multiple critical safety issues with the vehicle, and recommended I get it towed. So I did. I am now trying to get my money back from this sketchy dealer. Thank God I got it inspected, otherwise my wife would have been driving in an unsafe vehicle. Thank you Tom Dwyer and the team! I spoke with Casey at the shop, and he’s great. He was like my therapist throughout my whole stressful situation these last couple of days – sorry Casey!!  I can’t recommend this shop enough. Honest folks, and very dependable.  My car was so bad; they didn’t even charge me for the inspection!!”

While we can’t guarantee free inspections, we did have a response that’s good advice for anyone looking to buy a used vehicle…

“Thank you from all of us Jorge, and extra thanks from Casey!  We were glad to help with that inspection and VERY glad to keep your family off the road with an unsafe car!

We wish you all the best with that Dealer but I think your situation offers a lesson for other folks in the car market… the single wisest thing anyone can do when buying a used vehicle is to get a PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION!  Don’t settle for a CarFax and don’t take the Seller’s word, go get it inspected by a qualified shop (with no relationship to the Seller) BEFORE you buy.  An inspection would the show any gross safety or mechanical concerns, and might also uncover small issues that could mean expensive repairs.  But doing it BEFORE you buy means you don’t have to dance and negotiate afterwards with someone who has already shown they’re willing to take your money for a dangerous lemon.   Many sellers, both Dealers and private parties (perhaps understandably) won’t part with the vehicle for the full day many shops would need for a full inspection.  But there are mobile inspection companies we recommend that can come to you (or the seller) and do the inspection there.  DO NOT BUY FROM ANYONE that will not let you get a competent inspection… run the other way, and consider yourself lucky you avoided an unsafe or expensive mistake!

Thanks again Jorge, and when you do get your situation sorted out we look forward to helping you care for whatever newer, more reliable vehicle you buy.”

We have a couple ongoing offers you might find valuable…

Carbon Neutral Program

Our company’s commitment to the environment led us to partner with Bonneville Environmental Foundation to create our Carbon Neutral Program in 2007. Client members offset the carbon production of their vehicles for one year AND save 10% on Labor Charges here at the shop! It’s a win for you AND our environment and it’s been very successful… since we instituted the program our members have prevented over 1.9 MILLION POUNDS of carbon from being dumped into our air!

Referral Reward Program

Year after year, referrals from our existing clients are our greatest source of new clients, so we’ve tried hard to think of some way to appropriately reward people for their referrals.  Our solution is  our Referral Reward Program, where we make donations to the non-profit group of your choice to say ‘thanks’ for your generous referralsHere’s how it works…

And just a couple other things to know…

Latest Automotive Recalls

Automobiles are just like any other product; occasional flaws in manufacture or design can cause problems once they leave the factory.  When an issue is identified the manufacturers and government work hard to bring the vehicles back in for refit or repair, but not all recalls make the front pages.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains a constantly updated list of recalls from every manufacturer.
