Tom’s Tidbits- The Domestic Enemies are winning

It’s been over two years since Donald Trump and his allies attacked our Capitol. Hundreds of low-level footsoldiers and thugs have been arrested, tried, and convicted, but the traitors who organized the attack still run free. Worse, these Domestic Enemies are actively and passively being empowered to continue their treason. It all stems from a failure to do the ONE THING that every American politician EXPLICITLY SWEARS to do… defend against Domestic Enemies.

Government officials, members of the military, and even many police officers take similar oaths to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” There are certainly gradations of “Domestic Enemy” and I’ve taken a broad view of the term in the past, including endangering food and energy security, promoting torture or war crimes, profiting at public expense, and more. People of good faith might disagree these qualify anyone as a “Domestic Enemy”, but there can be no disagreement that an attack on our government to overturn a legitimate election is the act of a Domestic Enemy of the United States. It’s definitional.

But look at that oath again…“Preserve… Protect… Defend”… those aren’t passive words. They create an assertive duty to act, and dereliction of duty is the act of a Domestic Enemy too. The traitors actively working to destroy America can’t, and don’t, do it alone. With apologies to the famous quote, “all that is necessary for Domestic Enemies to prosper is for other Domestic Enemies to do nothing”. With all due respect to the Jan 6 Committee, it’s been over two years since we were attacked yet none of the coup leaders have even been arrested, much less tried or imprisoned.

This lack of action has left the traitors not just free to continue their subversion but in a better position to do it again. Trump himself is running for President, while co-conspirators like Jordan, Greene, and Boebert are being elevated to committees dealing with their own sedition. Propagandists like Carlson and Hannity have the opportunity to lie, distort, and twist history to dilute the seriousness of the crimes and shift responsibility. Strategists like Bannon, Stone, and Eastman are busily polishing legal and political plans. Thugs like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys have time to stockpile weapons and refine tactics. A failed coup, if not punished, is indeed a dress rehearsal for next time.

Every day, week, month, and now year that’s gone by, I’ve held out hope that the Domestic Enemies of Jan 6 would be arrested and tried, but nothing’s happened. Despite continued promises that indictments are just around the corner, I’m losing faith that our ‘leaders’ even understand their Constitutional duties, much less intend to live up to them. I realize that real Justice takes time, and I fully support a careful investigation instead of a rush to judgement. But I think we’re long past the point of reasonable caution, and well into the realm that our Domestic Enemies are winning.

Justice delayed is truly justice denied. For all of us.
