I’m Tom Dwyer,
Media trumpeted the fact that another US drone attack just killed the Al Qaeda second in command… Again.
The news came on the heels of a report describing the process for approving these collateral-damage-rich drone strikes. Three people sitting in a room poring over pictures of suspected terrorists until one person, the President decides which ones to kill.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely, so what are the limits to this power?
I respect President Obama and he has my support; if there’s anyone I’d trust to make these decisions, it would be him.
But I don’t trust anyone to manage death by drone. This unaccountable form of war is dangerous policy, creating more enemies for us than we can kill and how will this power be wielded by future presidents?
Our government was intended to be a system of checks and balances designed to prevent the kind of abuses we’re seeing.
