I’m Tom Dwyer,
This year’s Defense Authorization Act decreed the abolition of Habeas Corpus, a fundamental right we may have taken for granted. Now anyone, including U S Citizens, can be labeled “terrorist” and held without trial until the end of the endless “War on Terror”.
President Obama promised to veto this abomination, but on New Year’s Eve, safe from media scrutiny, he signed it into law.
Obama’s “serious reservations” were assuaged in his non-binding signing statement, with a promise that “…his Administration would not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens.”
Why create power if not to be used? Even if you trust Obama, what about the presidents to come?
We are not a nation of trust; we are a nation of law. Rights can’t rely on leaders choosing not to abuse power, but on limiting that power in the first place.
It’s not a right if it’s only a promise.
