Popcorn Shorts for July 2022

Cool stuff that’s too small for a big article

Just like it says, Popcorn Shorts is about the kind of things we think are really interesting, but don’t really need a large article to explain them.  From the sublime to the ridiculous, check in here for crunchy bits of info you’ll love to munch.  By the way, much (but not necessarily all) of our delicious Popcorn comes from articles we’ve posted on our Facebook page.  If you’re on Facebook, please stop by and “Like” us and we’ll keep a fairly-constant-but-not-frequent-enough-to-be-annoying stream of these coming to your virtual door!

This $4000 Tiny 3D Printed Home Can Be Built In Just One Day

Julie Hambleton, ThePremierDaily.com “… The welcome center itself is a gorgeous little building. Standing at 500 square feet, it was designed by Logan Architecture over several days and then constructed in just 27 hours. It features black, white, and natural wood. The interior design was done by designer Claire Zinnecker and home goods company Industry West.  The idea is to not just make affordable homes for people, but ones that are actually enjoyable to live in and can help people make positive changes in their lives… Affordability is the biggest hurdle that ICON is attempting to get over. They want these homes to be as affordable as possible.  Currently, a 3D-printed home from the Vulcan printer costs $10,000 US. The company says they have plans to lower that cost all the way down to just $4000…”

It’s a SELLWOOD SUMMER!

Summer’s in full swing, in a way it hasn’t been for a couple years now.  If you’re ready to get out and see summer in-person once again, Sellwood is here to help.  There are events happening all over our neighborhood, and you’re sure to find something that fits with you.  You’ll want to check out the Sellwood/Moreland Farmers Market, Saturdays from May through October, Sellwood Last Thursdays on the last Thursday July thru October, Tom Dwyer is a Sponsor of SMILE’s Summer Music on Saturdays through August, Sellwood’s Summerville shopping spree is just a week away with a Thursday concert at Sellwood Park on Jul 29, and The Sellwood Pools are already open.  Dig in!

The Goonies Ghostship… FOUND!

“The Beeswax Wreck was one of two Manilla Galleons that were lost at sea between 1650-1750. At first, it was believed that the artifacts came from the San Francisco Xavier, which disappeared in 1705… Inspired by The Goonies, groups of kids would explore the coast, hunting down hidden treasures and signs of shipwrecks. One of those kids was Craig Andes, a now grownup commercial fisherman in northern Oregon. He contacted the MAS to tell them about pieces of timber he had found in a sea cave in 2013…”

Who’s the Fake?

In the picture at left you see four pleasant, average folks.  Nothing suspicious at all, and that’s the point… there’s no reason to suspect one of them is a fake.  But which one?  (tick tock… tick tock… tick tock)  HA!  Fooled you!  THEY’RE ALL FAKE PEOPLE, produced completely from scratch by the website ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com.  It’s a weird website, no text at all, in fact the only thing you see is a photo.  Refreshing the page brings up another pic, one after the other.  It’s an amazing new type of AI Machine learning, the Generative Adversarial Network.  We couldn’t understand how it works at all, but maybe you could with an advanced mathematics/computer background and the links here, here, here, and here.
