I’m Tom Dwyer,
Portland’s considering an ordinance requiring businesses to provide at least five sick days per employee each year.
Responsible employers already offer good benefits to keep the best possible people, so this ordinance is aimed at pushing the minority that don’t.
A free market needs rules to keep things even, but I don’t think forcing employers to control wage policy is the best use of local government.
Maybe this could be an opportunity to bring about sensible rules, and new ways to see them implemented.
Rather than a stick to force behavior, what about a carrot for businesses that choose ethical behavior? How about positive incentives like; reductions in property taxes or lower business license fees for showing a company complies? Portland has enough disincentives for business growth as it is… how about something positive?
Paid Sick leave is simple common sense! Go to “everybody benefits pdx dot org” to speak up…. get involved.
