Last year, President Obama expressed “serious objections” to the Two Thousand Eleven Defense Authorization Act but signed it in to law anyway, promising to oppose any attempt to extend or expand it.
This year’s Defense Authorization extended and expanded it, ordaining rendition and indefinite detention without trial, for anyone suspected of ambiguous terrorism charges… including U S Citizens.
President Obama promised to veto this abomination, but on a Saturday; New Year’s eve, safe from media scrutiny, he signed it into law.
Obama relegated his “serious reservations” to a non-binding signing statement and a promise that “…his Administration would not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens.”
Where’s the outrage? Where’s the pushback as American freedom vanishes?
Even though he claims he won’t use the power, what about the presidents to come?
Our civil liberties are one step closer to extinction. We don’t have rights when promises, not laws, back them.
