Choosing Ryan doesn’t make sense for Romney; it strengthens the base, but insults the moderates and independents critical to his twenty twelve win. The contrast of mushy Mitt standing onstage next to the myopic Objectivist True Believer can’t help his chances.
Ryan’s choice is a clear victory… for the people who actually made it, the power brokers of the conservative movement. Bill Crystal, Grover Norquist, Karl Rove and the rest didn’t trust Romney to carry their flag before, and they still don’t now… their goal isn’t Mitt in twenty twelve; they’re grooming their boy Paul Ryan for twenty sixteen. If this odd couple does make it to the White House, the social contract we’ve all contributed to will be just one of many of our country’s exceptional principles to fall.
