Einstein showed that it is impossible for anything to move faster than light. This ultimate speed limit has been proved over and over again and it now underlies every aspect of modern physics. We know it’s true… except that maybe it’s not. A theory proposed by Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre involves compressing space in front of a spacecraft so that the same speed covers more distance, effectively letting the ship cheat the speed limit. This has been thought to involve massive amounts of energy (on the scale of the output of stars) far beyond our capacity to generate, but that may be changing.
