Tom Dwyer Automotive Services, Inc. was founded in 1981 by Tom Dwyer, who established the shop in Portland, Oregon, following his dissatisfaction with the unethical practices he witnessed in the automotive industry. A defining moment for the company’s philosophy occurred when Dwyer, then an employee at another shop, refused an employer’s order to sell an unnecessary and expensive brake job to an elderly customer whose car only required a simple cleaning and adjustment. This commitment to “education over promotion” became the bedrock of the new business, which has operated from its current location at the east end of the Sellwood Bridge for over 40 years.

The shop’s evolution has been marked by a focus on technical excellence and environmental stewardship. Early on, Dwyer recognized the increasing complexity of vehicle computer systems and moved away from the industry-standard “Flat-Rate” pay system, which rewards speed over craftsmanship, in favor of salary or hourly compensation for his technicians. This allowed the team to prioritize thorough inspections and complete vehicle care rather than just rapid part replacement. In 2010, the company reinforced its community values by becoming an Eco-Certified Carbon Neutral business, pioneering a program that allows clients to offset their vehicles’ carbon emissions through the purchase of Green Tags.
